	STUDY ON SAND - PART I2021-2023
	

In the first part of Study on Sand, I indulge in action-reaction, initiating a search for hidden patterns in the volatility of pure expression. The innocent action of throwing sand into the air leads to uncontrollable outbursts. An underlying force that materializes in free and expansive forms. The sand particles join and separate, blurring the group and questioning the entity of the individual unit or the entity of the group itself. Where does one begin and the other end? Questions like this also: What is the inertia that moves them? How do we act as a group? Do we act freely within a spiral of social behavior? Or do we get carried away by the artifice of the movement?

The unexpectedness of the result is only the illusion made form, because the laws that govern its behavior are nothing but this hidden pattern, a projected order. Perhaps inertia and gravity are also silently directing. Thus the project proposes striking images loaded with content, where the interaction of one with the group is questioned and explored all the time. Is dance really a free expression?

“There are no humans after all” reflect the&#38;nbsp;perpetuity of the raw natural world and its phenomena over&#38;nbsp;the temporality and trace of the human condition.


This is both a look into the past and into the future&#38;nbsp;where the same silent world continuos to shape its surface&#38;nbsp;despite of what walks upon it. The beauty of constant&#38;nbsp;shaping, of constant reinventing.

The essence of time is reflected in a hidden dynamism.&#38;nbsp;The tremendously patient and creative aspect and its&#38;nbsp;incomprehensible detachment to its on-doings.
The delicacy of the lines, the abstraction of its shapes and&#38;nbsp;matter, the finest of the materials, the imposition of its size,&#38;nbsp;the endless transformation of a breathing world. And yet&#38;nbsp;there is the artist vision upon it, trying to force and change it&#38;nbsp;through manipulation. But where does it start and finish? But it’s just an illusion cause&#38;nbsp;there are no humans after all, and the artist vision is just a&#38;nbsp;tribute to those places while the places remain strong, pure&#38;nbsp;and changing.

					In a time where we live connected to our electronic devices in a constant and addictive way, our
body and mind adapt to new forms of communication and relational modes with technology.
The series Isolation Mode explores the mechanism of relation with virtuality, showing the mental dimension in which we enter when communicating through these devices.

					
Far from establishing an analysis of whether it affects positively or negatively in our individual
mood and its complexities at different levels, the series aims to show the desire for disconnection and isolation that we can experience.

					
The idea of entering into another dimension between the organic and the digital, between
natural and artificial or between fictitious and palpable. An ambiguous and conceptual route
in the form of a welcoming portal that hides and highlights the controversial relationship that
humans have with devices.

					
This series combine various media and artistic methods in order to draw these atmospherical
scenarios, approaching the observer to a new dimension.

	SOME SILENT BALLADS2016
	

					Hiraeth, Sehnsucht or Saudade. Words that have no direct translation in many languages but belong to an individual experience.

					
Some Silent Ballads is an attempt to understand the concept of Saudade, a portuguese word with
complex meaning and ambiguous profiles, which some have ventured to define.
Saudade is described as a deep feeling of melancholy product of memories of an absent joy, and is
used to express this mixture of feelings of love, loss, distance, loneliness, emptiness and need.
Saudade is the sensation that remains when the feeling that once we had, now is lost. It often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing might never return.The fact of remembering it, of wanting to have it back, gives us a heartwarming effect, sadness and
happiness all together.

					
Far from being a literal representation, the series is an exploratory journey through the different elements that build its complex meaning. Thus, I create an imaginary tissue between presence and absence; between time and space, and between search and desire. Natural elements are consumed and
fade like traces of memories, the fierce indication of the inevitable pass of time or the signs of hope
in reaching that feeling again. All images are shown as hidden spots, silent ballads that fill our minds.

					
A red path that leads us metaphorically to this mix of longing, yearning, nostalgia and wistfulness.

The innocent eye that gazes the wild peak 
of the unknown landscape.

				
					In Zugunruhe series I dive into a world where identity is forged in the act of migrating.

					
Zugunruhe is a german word that means migratory restlessness. No strings attached, no place, no
home. The inner need of keep moving, as the bird knows when is time to depart.

					
The series aims to reflect the impact of the unknown. The fear and curiosty that comes from that first
impression of a new place and subsequent reaction and adaptation. The constant rediscover of a hos-
tile and foreign territory and the feeling of not belonging anywhere.

					
The vastness and darkness of the landscape allow me to emphasize the feeling of doom that you can
get when you feel isolated in the unknown. At the same time, I pretend to enhance some profound
aspects of human nature through its close relationship and reaction to adversities of nature.

					
I used a world of irrational stone landscape, electrifying green and steaming formations to suggest
this aspect of human condition.

	Laia Gutiérrez is a photographer and visual artist from Barcelona. She studied Fine Arts in the
University of Barcelona while pushing her photographic practice forward.

					The focus of Gutiérrez’s photographs lies within exposing hidden and complex aspects of human
condition. She uses mostly landscape and isolated elements, sometimes combined with postpro-duction effects to create singular projects to dive in. Timeless aspects shaped into contemporary
images.

					Her practice is far away from literalness, as she understands photography as a metaphorical process, closer to poetry. A place to get lost and be inspired by the images.

					Her work is built in a place where middle gray is darker, where tension comes out of a latent calm.
Most of her series show inevitably uncanny atmospheres, as she tries to reveal what at first sight
can be plain but catches another world inside.
